Design hacks from the hansgrohe team

Bathroom beautification without renovation: Upgrades that transform any bathroom into a premium design

Do you want to modernize your bathroom without a full renovation? It can be done with little design hacks that beautify your bathroom and emphasize what’s important to you. Whether you want a bathroom for everyday use, a home-spa vibe or a family bathroom, hansgrohe employees reveal their favorite improvements to their own bathrooms.

A wall-mounted sideboard provides two functions in one: Additional storage space and a practical seat.

Is your bathroom not quite the way you want it, but it’s not the right time for a full renovation? If plants, a fresh lick of paint on the walls or a new set of towels is no longer enough to truly enhance your bathroom, it may be time for an upgrade or two: Small changes that are relatively easy to implement and have a huge impact.

We’ve asked around to find out the simple improvements hansgrohe employees have made to their own bathrooms to turn them into the room they’ve always wanted.

Effective lighting: Basic, functional, and ambiance light

The right lighting is a favorite in the hansgrohe team. To get the right lighting, it helps if you can incorporate several light sources that perform various roles. If you’re not about to renovate, you can improve the bathroom with functional and ambiance lighting:

Illuminated mirror and lamps for indirect light in the shower and next to the wash basin.
An illuminated mirror and additional lighting create a relaxing atmosphere, both within the shower and beyond.
  • Basic lighting, for example large panels, the lamp you already own or spotlights in the wall or ceiling, ensures your room is bright enough. A smart lighting system also enables you to flexibly control the brightness and light color.
  • Indirect lighting helps to create the right ambiance: Bulbs or LED strips in wall niches, under the wash basin, or under shelves create a calm atmosphere. Make sure the light here is warm white.
  • Functional lighting: Illuminated mirrors that point the light in a specific direction are perfect for tasks requiring precision, such as shaving or applying makeup.

I think the right lighting mix is crucial: The light intensity and the color need to be just right. In my bathroom, I have spotlights for basic lighting plus atmospheric lighting on the wall and lighting to do my makeup – I get that little extra light from my illuminated mirror.

Matching faucets for the wash basin, shower and bath tub

Older couple hugging in the bathroom.
Color-coordinated details make the bathroom look tidy: The Metropol faucet for the wash basin, the Rainfinity overhead shower, shoulder shower, and the niches are all in Brushed Bronze.

In older bathrooms, you often have to grapple with well-worn or old-fashioned faucets – but it’s not difficult to replace them with a model in an interesting shape and a modern color like Matt Black or Brushed Bronze. If you choose the faucets for the shower, bath tub, and wash basin in the same style, the bathroom immediately looks neater. Modern faucets also help you to save water and still enjoy your shower in the same way.

Oliver Fies, Team Lead Brand Management, wanted a different matching upgrade for his bathroom: “The Designflex shower hose is a high-quality textile shower hose made of recycled plastic. It fits any connection – and its multiple colors also look great with any faucet.”

Julia Dold, Head of Product Management Showerplace.

Replacing faucets is easier than you might think – at least when you have modern exposed installation faucets that are installed in front of the wall rather than from within it. New faucets can then simply be installed on existing connections.

I think it’s the subtle interplay between colors and shapes that transform it from a functional bathroom into a cozy retreat. An example of a small upgrade with a huge impact is having the showers and faucets in FinishPlus finishes that coordinate in harmony with the furniture and ceramics.

A spa experience in the shower: Spray modes for every mood

Woman in a towel checking the spray from the Rainfinity overhead shower.
With the Rainfinity overhead, shoulder, and hand shower combination, you have a choice of four spray modes: PowderRain, Intense PowderRain, MonoRain, and RainStream.

One of the most important factors in a good shower is how the water flows from the shower head. In addition to water pressure, the spray mode plays a vital role here. And spray modes are a science in themselves:

To ensure every shower’s spray feels exactly as it should, the hansgrohe spray and sound laboratory tinkers away and tries out all sorts of combinations of shapes plus the number of water droplets until the desired result is achieved. Modern shower heads often have several different spray modes that you can switch by pressing a button. So one shower head offers several vastly different shower experiences. A gentle shower spray such as PowderRain is pampering, while stronger spray modes such as Rain or Massage wake you up and relieve tension – so that you always get precisely the shower you need in that moment.

Shower heads are easy to upgrade: Simply unscrew your old hand shower and replace it with the new one. If you are installing an overhead shower for the first time, you will need a new connection. If you already have an exposed installation connection, you can install a full shower system with an overhead shower.

I think the shower head makes all the difference: A quick replacement, and the showering experience becomes incomparable. The fine, even droplets create a refreshing feeling day after day and immediately take the entire bathroom to the next level.

The shower pipe: An all-in-one upgrade for your shower

A shower pipe enables you to choose between an overhead and hand shower every day – as well as between several carefully refined spray modes.

Big upgrade, little effort: A shower pipe is a full shower system with overhead shower, hand shower, shower thermostat, handshower holder, shower hose, and shower bar. It’s particularly helpful if you want a new overhead shower but don’t have the connections for it yet.

Shower pipes are available for most hansgrohe product ranges, including as a Raindance Alive shower pipe and a Rainfinity shower pipe.

Installation is easy and can be done in any bathroom, as everything goes on existing connections.

The result: Your shower immediately looks neater and more modern – and the change brings you an all-round relaxing showering experience.

The Raindance Alive Q shower pipe comes with my two favorite spray modes: PowderRain and RainAir for a sensational showering experience. And it looks great: The exposed installation is minimalist to the point of looking like a concealed installation.

A clear view: Illuminated mirrors with anti-fog technology

Woman doing her makeup at the heated mirror.
A heated mirror saves time: An anti-fog function means you don’t have to wait for the mirror to clear naturally.

An illuminated mirror is a real eye-catcher in the bathroom. It looks modern and ensures the light falls on your face. This means no shadows to get in the way of shaving or makeup routines.

It’s particularly practical when the light is dimmable and the color temperature can be adjusted. You can then use the light as a functional tool and to create the right atmosphere. For example, bright and clear in the mornings, nice and soft in the evenings. An integrated heating function also prevents the mirror from fogging, so it’s always ready for use.

Isabelle Angot, Head of Marketing Europe.

My tip: An illuminated mirror with anti-fog function. I love hot showers, but this would make a normal mirror fog up immediately. A mirror surface with a specialized anti-fog function solves this problem. And with good lighting at face height, I can apply my makeup with precision – a small upgrade that makes my day-to-day life so much simpler.

Seating for extra comfort in everything from family bathrooms to home spas

Two girls playing on a large stool in the bathroom.
If you have enough space, adding a seat to the bathroom is an easy decision to make: It means no one ever has to sit on the floor or the bath tub trim again.

This may be the easiest possible improvement – if you have the space: Seating, either fixed or movable, instantly makes your bathroom more human-centric and easier to use. It simplifies body-care routines, to get dressed, and to relax. And there are so many options: A bench design or stool, a wall-mounted sideboard with storage space, or a sturdy washing basket with a seat.

For a later renovation: A built-in seat within the shower genuinely offers more comfort and safety – and a huge amount of relief in times when you’re less mobile, for example after an injury.

Oliver Fies, Team Lead Brand Management.

There’s not much space in our bathroom, but we absolutely need a seat: We opted for a sturdy sideboard so that it could also be used for storage.

Storage cabinets for a tidy look

Hand opening a vanity unit drawer by tapping on it.
Even in a small bathroom, you can create storage space with a solid vanity unit to make the bathroom look tidier in an instant.

The trick to a tidy bathroom: Bathroom furniture with enough space. If all the little things you have in the bathroom could disappear out of sight, it would instantly look tidier. The perfect solution: Storage cabinets, for example tall cabinets or vanity units, depending on whether you want to mount them on the wall or put them in a specific position.

If you are undergoing a more extensive renovation, it’s worth going the extra mile to reduce visible clutter: For example, concealing the shower hose with an sBox in the bath tub or adding built-in accessories such as a tiled waste bin, toilet brush holder, and toilet paper holder. Grout-free wall surfaces also give the bathroom a calmer look and help to keep the walls cleaner for longer.

Sarah Kaufung, Marketing Manager New Product Introduction.

I am very much Team Tidy. All toiletries and towels are stowed away in closed cabinets in my bathroom. This makes it easier for me to clean and simply looks neater. I have a shelf purely for decorative items – and the decoration makes it come into its own.
